    Weird dream...
Had a strange dream a few days ago. I was helping some folks escape from a crazed reflex-boosted assassin by acting as the rear-guard as they cut through some abandoned offices attached to a generic industrial building/warehouse. The assassin was a friend of mine from college, who was none too stable back then. In the dream, the government or whomever it was that the folks were running from had boosted her instability along with her reflexes. If you're a Larry Niven fan, think Feather Filip from "Procrustes" but with the reflexes of Protector stage Teela Brown from "Ringworld Engineers". I had passed my shotgun off to someone else, and was using a stockless semi-auto only AK chopped down to pistol size on a rear-mounted sling. She caught up to me, and I tried to talk her down. She had a big Gil Hibben type knife and was well within 21 feet. Things went into super slow-motion when she made her move, and she still was a blur. I managed to wing her on the third shot, and she was knocked over by the shot. I was stepping sideways to move wide around the desk she'd partly fallen behind when my alarm went off & woke me up.

Writer's Block: She's a brainiac on the floor

Would you rather be super-rich or super-smart if you would only be average in the other category?

First question listed was submitted by lynsay31. (Follow-up questions, if any, may have been added by LiveJournal.)

I picked super-smart, and average wealth. As most lotto winners prove, lots of wealth and average smarts is like giving a loaded machinegun to a chimp. It never ends well...

    Ana's on its way...
...and still no word as to who's on Team A or B in case of a storm. (IE, who stays and who goes if there's an evacuation order) Last year we didn't find out until 40 hours ahead of Gustav's landfall. WTF? It's not like hurricane season sneaks up on us. It starts on June 1, anyone with a damn calendar can see when it's going to start. How difficult would it be to, oh, I don't know, actually WORK OUT WHO'S ON WHICH TEAM AHEAD OF TIME, JUST LIKE EVERY OTHER DEPARTMENT IN THE GODS-DAMNED HOSPITAL DID? I'm likely on Team A because I prefer working nights, have my ham radio license, and am on the volunteer emergency decontamination team. Oh, and word came down last week that because of a freeze on raises, those of us who've been waiting to get the job titles which go with what we actually do get to wait some more. If the economy weren't in the gutter, I'd seriously be considering just putting in my two weeks even before finding something else at this point.

    It's here....
The God-King of flashlights arrived this morning. On the high setting, the bloody thing is over 100 times brighter than my Surefire. I'm currently wandering around w/ purple blotches in my vision from seeing what the strobe setting looks like from the business end of the thing.

    No Truce With Kings
The Old Issue - Rudyard Kipling
    October 9, 1899

    (Outbreak of Boer War)

Here is nothing new nor aught unproven," say the Trumpets,
"Many feet have worn it and the road is old indeed.
"It is the King--the King we schooled aforetime! "
(Trumpets in the marshes-in the eyot at Runnymede!)

"Here is neither haste, nor hate, nor anger," peal the Trumpets,
"Pardon for his penitence or pity for his fall.
    "It is the King!"--inexorable Trumpets--
(Trumpets round the scaffold af the dawning by Whitehall!)

    . . . . . . .

"He hath veiled the Crown And hid the Scepter," warn (he Trum pets,
"He hath changed the fashion of the lies that cloak his will.
"Hard die the Kings--ah hard--dooms hard!" declare the Trumpets,
Trumpets at the gang-plank where the brawling troop-decks fill!

Ancient and Unteachable, abide--abide the Trumpets!
Once again the Trumpets, for the shuddering ground-swell brings
Clamour over ocean of the harsh, pursuing Trumpets--
Trumpets of the Vanguard that have sworn no truce with Kings!

All we have of freedom, all we use or know--
This our fathers bought for us long and long ago.

Ancient Right unnoticed as the breath we draw--
Leave to live by no man's leave, underneath the Law.

Lance and torch and tumult, steel and grey-goose wing
Wrenched it, inch and ell and all, slowly from the king.

Till our fathers 'stablished,, after bloody years,
How our King is one with us, first among his peers.

So they bought us freedom-not at little cost--
Wherefore must we watch the King, lest our gain be lost.

Over all things certain, this is sure indeed,
Suffer not the old King: for we know the breed.

Give no ear to bondsmen bidding us endure.
Whining "He is weak and far"; crying "Time will cure."

(Time himself is witness, till the battle joins,
Deeper strikes the rottenness in the people's loins.)

Give no heed to bondsmen masking war with peace.
Suffer not the old King here or overseas.

They that beg us barter--wait his yielding mood--
Pledge the years we hold in trust-pawn our brother's blood--

Howso' great their clamour, whatsoe'er their claim,
Suffer not the old King under any name!

Here is naught unproven--here is naught to learn.
It is written what shall fall if the King return.

He shall mark our goings, question whence we came,
Set his guards about us, as in Freedom's name.

    He shall take a tribute, toll of all our ware;
He shall change our gold for arms--arms we may not bear.

    He shall break his Judges if they cross his word;
He shall rule above the Law calling on the Lord.

He shall peep and mutter; and the night shall bring
Watchers 'neath our window, lest we mock the King --

    Hate and all division; hosts of hurrying spies;
Money poured in secret, carrion breeding flies.

Strangers of his counsel, hirelings of his pay,
These shall deal our Justice: sell-deny-delay.

We shall drink dishonour, we shall eat abuse
For the Land we look to--for the Tongue we use.

We shall take our station, dirt beneath his feet,
While his hired captains jeer us in the street.

Cruel in the shadow, crafty in the sun,
Far beyond his borders shall his teachings run.

    Sloven, sullen, savage, secret, uncontrolled,
Laying on a new land evil of the old--

Long-forgotten bondage, dwarfing heart and brain--
All our fathers died to loose he shall bind again.

Here is nought at venture, random nor untrue
Swings the wheel full-circle, brims the cup anew.

Here is naught unproven, here is nothing hid:
Step for step and word for word--so the old Kings did!

Step by step, and word by word: who is ruled may read.
Suffer not the old Kings: for we know the breed--

All the right they promise--all the wrong they bring.
Stewards of the Judgment, suffer not this King !

Text of the House healthcare bill
    http://edlabor.house.gov/documents/111/pdf/publications/AAHCA-BillText-071409.pdf

Note on page 16, section 102 of the bill it says,

    (a) GRANDFATHERED HEALTH INSURANCE COVERAGE DEFINED.
—Subject to the succeeding provisions of
this section, for purposes of establishing acceptable
coverage under this division, the term ‘‘grandfathered health
insurance coverage’’ means individual health insurance
coverage that is offered and in force and effect before the
first day of Y1 if the following conditions are met:
    (1) LIMITATION ON NEW ENROLLMENT.—
    (A) IN GENERAL.—Except as provided in
this paragraph, the individual health insurance
issuer offering such coverage does not enroll
any individual in such coverage if the first
effective date of coverage is on or after the first
    day of Y1.

So, if this thing passes and you want to change providers, your only choice is the .gov plan. Oh, and better hope the coverage you have is the coverage you'll need for the rest of your life.

    (2) LIMITATION ON CHANGES IN TERMS OR
    22 CONDITIONS.—Subject to paragraph (3) and except
23 as required by law, the issuer does not change any
24 of its terms or conditions, including benefits and
25 cost-sharing, from those in effect as of the day
26 before the first day of Y1.

This is from the bill itself, and not what some nut on the radio is ranting about. Anyone who says you're going to be able to have a private option under this thing is lying through their teeth. You may want to report them to the flag@whitehouse.gov snitch line. No, I'm not making that up either. LINK You too can be an inoffizielle Mitarbeiter, informing on you unmutual neighbors. They said if I voted for McCain, the government would be asking us to report suspicious political behavior to the authorities, and they were right...

    It is finished...
Well, the move is anyhow. Now comes the unpacking, sorting, shouting, "Where the hell is my $ITEM?", and buying of shelving to put stuff on. Also the upgrading of the bedding. On an air mattress for now. A proper bed will follow over the next few paychecks. Went too cheap on the previous one...

Bless me Cooper, for I have sinned...
Today I bought a euro-pellet throwing crunchenticker, which doesn't even use a high capacity magazine.

Translated from gun-geek, I bought a double-action 9mm pistol at the gun-show today. A SIG-Sauer P-6, the West German police version of the P-225. Only holds 8 shots, but it's a freaking SIG, and the price was such that (once I've had the chance to be sure it'll work w/ hollowpoints) I can toss it in the glovebox and not be heartbroken if it gets confiscated post self-defense shooting or if it gets swiped. Pics to follow later.

Four! Attending four conventions this year! Bwah-hahahahaha!
Just reserved my room for Con*Stellation in September, and mailing my pre-reg on Monday. Haven't attended this one before, but it's located in a town where folks give directions in relation to a Saturn V and it's the 28th year they've run, so it should be pretty good.
